Seeing cancer as a part of life that touches every person and community is today’s reality and the spark for MCI's first podcast. This is more than knowing and fighting cancer. It’s more than just relaying science, hope and technology. It’s a platform for knowledge, stories, coping advice, life tips, inspiration, humor, jokes and even smiles. Together our purpose is to demystify cancer, take away as much fear out of the diagnosis, treatment and process as we can, and defeat its grip on our lives.

The Cancers We Treat At Mitchell Cancer Institute

The oncologists at USA Health are experienced at giving patients every opportunity to fight, overcome and survive the following cancer diagnoses.

Brain Cancer

Refers to any of the several types of tumors that occur in the spinal cord or brain when cells mutate and grow.

Breast Cancer

A cancer that arises when cells mutate and reproduce without control, usually beginning in the milk-producing part of the breast.

Cervical Cancer

A cancer that develops in the cells of the cervix, which connects the vagina and the lower part of the uterus.

Colorectal Cancer

Commonly referred to as colon cancer, this cancer occurs when polyps or abnormal growths inside the large intestine or rectum become cancerous.

Endometrial Cancer

Sometimes referred to as uterine cancer, this occurs when malignant tumors develop in the layer of cells that line the walls of the uterus.

Gastrointestinal Cancer

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer refers to all cancers in the organs of your digestive tract, including the stomach, intestines, pancreas, colon, liver, rectum, anus and biliary system.

Head and Neck Cancers

As the name implies, this family of cancers happen in the head and neck region. They include lip, mouth, throat and tongue cancer, as well as cancer of the pituitary, thyroid and salivary gland, among others.

Hodgkin’s Disease

Also called Hodgkin’s lymphoma, this rare cancer of the lymphatic system is distinguished from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma by the presence of the Reed-Sternberg cell.

Leukemia

A cancer of the bone marrow and lymph system, leukemia occurs when the body’s bone marrow produces white blood cells that are abnormal and don’t function properly.

Liver Cancer

Primary liver cancer starts in the liver, an organ that helps digest food and remove toxins from your body. Several types of tumors can form there, and these tumors have different causes and are treated differently.

Liver Metastases (Secondary Liver Cancer)

When cancer begins in another part of the body and spreads to the liver, it metastasizes. This is different from primary liver cancer, which is much more rare.

Lung Cancer

As the name implies, this cancer stems from the lungs, and there are three different types. Knowing the type is important to the treatment.

Melanoma

The most dangerous of all skin cancers, melanoma develops when skin cells experience DNA damage, primarily through exposure to UV light, and mutate into cancerous cells.

Multiple Myeloma

A blood cancer in which the body’s plasma cells generate too much protein. This protein then causes damage to organs.

Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

A cancer of the lymphatic system where lymphocytes, or cancer-fighting cells, mutate and begin to multiply, crowding out normal, healthy cells.

Ovarian Cancer

A cancer that begins in one of the two ovaries in a woman’s reproductive system.

Pancreatic Cancer

One of a group of cancers that form in the pancreas when cells mutate, multiply and spread uncontrollably until they form a tumor.

Prostate Cancer

A cancer that occurs in the prostate, a small gland located near the bladder. It is one of the most common cancers in men.

Sarcoma

Sarcoma is a rare cancerous tumor that occurs in connective tissues - fat, nerve, muscle, bone. Sarcomas that grow to the size of a basketball or watermelon can also be found in the abdomen.

Stomach (Gastric) Cancer

A cancer that occurs in the stomach, usually when the mucus-producing cells that line the wall of the stomach mutate and become cancerous.

Uterine Cancer

While typically diagnosed as endometrial cancer, it can also be uterine sarcoma, which is a cancer that forms in the muscles of the uterus as opposed to the uterus lining.

When your oncologist recommends chemotherapy or any other treatment involving drug infusion, you will get expert infusion services at Mitchell Cancer Institute (MCI). At our state-of-the-art infusion suite, designed specifically with patient needs in mind, we strive to make receiving chemotherapy as convenient and comfortable as possible.

Large windows overlooking a beautiful landscape and outdoor patio fill the infusion suite with bright natural light. Comfortable chairs in a communal setting provide a relaxed atmosphere and offer loved ones space to remain with the patient while they receive treatment. Each infusion station features a computer with wireless internet service and TV/cable service that allows the patient to watch television, a movie or surf the internet, and hopefully helps make visits as stress-free as possible.

A team of cancer professionals provides care to our patients requiring chemotherapy. This infusion team includes two full-time pharmacists with special training and certification in oncology, nurses, nurse practitioners, a dietitian and a social worker. Our Chemo Sabe volunteers, also part of our infusion team, are present to lend a hand, offer refreshments or provide a warm smile when needed.
