Since opening in 1990, the school within the hospital has served more than 35,000 children. Anne M. Vella, Ph.D., founder of ClassAct, is retiring at the end of the 2024-25 school year.
About USA Speech and Hearing Center
The University of South Alabama Speech and Hearing Center is a clinical instruction facility within the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology in the Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions. The center is committed to enhancing communication and quality of life by providing comprehensive speech, language, and hearing services while fostering excellence in clinical education, training, and research.
Our mission is twofold:
1. To serve the community by offering high-quality diagnostic and treatment services for individuals of all ages with speech, language, and hearing disorders.
2. To educate and train future professionals by providing supervised, hands-on clinical experiences essential for graduation, licensure, and certification in speech-language pathology and audiology.
As both a service facility and a teaching facility, the USA Speech and Hearing Center integrates evidence-based practices to ensure exceptional patient care while preparing students for competent and ethical clinical practice.
At the USA Speech and Hearing Center, we treat patients of all ages. Our services include assessment, therapy and treatment for speech, language, swallowing, and hearing conditions, including the following:
- Aphasia therapy
- Articulation therapy
- Auditory processing
- Augmentative and alternative communication
- Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
- Cochlear implant programming
- Fluency (stuttering) therapy
- Hearing aid evaluations and fittings

Hours of Operation
The USA Speech and Hearing Center's hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hearing aid walk-in hours are Monday only from 9 to 11 a.m.
