The new Whiddon College of Medicine building will provide state-of-the-art laboratory spaces that will create flexibility and efficiency for research today and in the future. It will also allow for expanding the class size of first-year medical students from 80 to 100, with the capability of increasing to 120 in the future, at the same time the nation faces a projected shortage of healthcare providers.

In 2023, the University of South Alabama Health Care Authority entered into an agreement with St. Louis-based Ascension to acquire Providence Hospital and its clinics in a transaction that enhanced the Mobile community’s access to high-quality healthcare.
Providence Hospital joined the University of South Alabama’s academic health system recognized for its outstanding service to patients and the community, including operating a Level I trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, burn center, Level III NICU, center for maternal-fetal medicine, cancer institute, and also functioning as a superior research and education facility.
USA Health is the only academic health system on the upper Gulf Coast.
