Through involvement in national discussions like the Beazley Symposium on Health Care Law and Policy, USA Health physicians such as Candice Holliday continue to advance the academic health system’s mission of improving health outcomes on the Alabama Gulf Coast and beyond.
The award, established in memory of longtime University of South Alabama trustee and MCI founding champion Mayer Mitchell, is presented annually to an emerging research leader at MCI following faculty committee review.
Inspired by her own “brace buddy,” Mia Van Sittert began learning about the organization and decided to raise money to donate bears to other children.
Halloween is more of a national holiday at the hospital, with events organized throughout the day by the Mapp Child and Family Life staff.
“Holidays often help parents and caregivers experience a sense of normalcy and help them connect with other families going through the same experience,” said Rachel Stanley, RN. “It can help new parents bond as they celebrate life and hope.”
Nearly half of all car seats are used incorrectly, which can reduce their effectiveness in protecting children during a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Monetary donations allow Feeding the Gulf Coast to stretch its budget. With a $1 donation, Feeding the Gulf Coast can provide five meals to local families in need.
“It’s a specialty where you often encounter complex and challenging cases that require critical thinking and decisive action, sometimes being the last line of support in life-or-death situations,” said Sagar Kumar, M.D. “That sense of responsibility and the ability to make a meaningful difference for patients and their families really motivate me.”
Richard Menger, M.D., MPA, and Tyler McDonald, M.D., showcased USA Health’s growing commitment for innovation and excellence in pediatric and complex spine care.
Families are encouraged to plan trick-or-treating before dark when visibility is better and traffic is lighter. Setting up a meeting place in case of separation and reviewing safety rules beforehand can also help ensure a fun and safe evening.
“It’s not just about great music — it’s about gathering to support lifesaving research and compassionate patient care that makes a meaningful difference to so many people,” said Shanna Thorpe, director of constituent engagement for USA Health.
