Surrounded by former patients and those still in treatment, leaders at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital, part of the academic health system for the University of South Alabama, accepted a $100,000 Impact Grant from Hyundai Hope on Wheels on Aug. 13 to support pediatric cancer research and the hospital’s pediatric oncology department.

The grant was presented during a Hyundai Hope on Wheels Handprint Ceremony at the hospital. With the latest grant, Hyundai Hope on Wheels has provided $325,000 to the hospital to support pediatric cancer research.

During the ceremony, Emily Poet, mother of 10-year-old Eva, talked about her daughter’s experience battling B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

“Everyone we have encountered has truly shown their care, compassion and is now part of our family for the rest of our lives,” Poet said of the hospital staff. “Eva and her battle buddies have gone through some tough times. There are highs and lows throughout their journeys. Good days are full of laughter in the clinic, fidget trading, dancing and playing like normal kids. Grants like the one Hyundai is presenting make these things possible. The care and love come from people, but the grants allow them to provide what they do to make cancer a little bit better for these kids.”

More than 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States, creating a critical need for research that can lead to more targeted and safer treatments.
