Shelby Smith has been named director of care access for USA Health’s outpatient academic practice, which includes clinic locations in both Mobile and Baldwin counties. In this new position, Smith will be responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive system that improves patient access to faculty physicians and advanced care providers as well as their patient experience.

“Shelby brings a wealth of experience in patient care and professional development opportunities to USA Health,” said Natalie Fox, DNP, PNP-BC, PCMH CCE, assistant administrator and chief nursing officer for USA Health’s academic outpatient clinics. “He will play a critical role in developing structure that will enhance appointment availability for patients who are seeking care from USA Health’s physicians, specialists, and advanced care providers.”

Prior to joining USA Health, Smith worked with Indiana University Health, the largest healthcare system in Indiana with 17 hospitals and approximately 30,000 employees. At IU Health, he most recently served as a director of system patient access. From 2010 to 2014, Smith served as a senior human resources consultant for IU Health.

Smith has also served his community as an elected official for 16 years. Most recently, he was president of the Pittsboro Town Council in Pittsboro, Ind.

Smith earned a Bachelor of Science degree in human services and counseling from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. He went on to earn his master’s degree in industrial/organizational psychology from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minn.
