What’s your job title and what does it entail?
I recently was promoted to secretary for the chair of the department of pediatrics, David Gremse, M.D., and I am still learning all that is involved in this new role. I’m also still serving as interim secretary for pediatric hematology/oncology, cardiology and gastroenterology. I assist each division by providing administrative support to the physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and facilitate communication between the divisions and their patients and families.

What is your favorite or most rewarding part of your position?
My favorite parts of my new position are being able to serve the Department of Pediatrics and meeting new faculty and staff.

What originally made you want to join USA Health?
I have been working in healthcare, mostly as a front desk receptionist, for over 20 years and decided I wanted to expand my horizons and experience working in a hospital.

How long have you been with USA Health?
Four years in March.

What has working with USA Health taught you?
I've learned that if you think of yourself in the same situation as our patients and their families, it will make you work harder to help them. On a personal note, I know that God placed me at USA Health for a reason, and I have learned that USA Health takes care of their own. In December of 2017, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer. Being able to receive the treatment recommended by MD Anderson here at the Mitchell Cancer Institute has been an incredible blessing. Also, being able to have scans and other tests at both University Hospital and Children's & Women's Hospital has also eased the stress that comes with this diagnosis.

Do you have any goals that you want to achieve in the health system?
Every day, my goal is to be a better person than I was the day before.

What is your favorite hobby or pastime outside of work?
I love spending time with my husband, our families, our friends and our four dogs: Bama, Bear, Crimson and Ellee. Of course, as you can tell by our dogs' names, we love watching Alabama football, too! Roll Tide!

Do you have any advice for people that want to work in the health system?
If you feel led to work at USA Health, then don't hesitate! Being a part of the USA Health family has been a huge blessing for me. If you have a great work ethic, are kind and empathetic, work hard and love learning, there is no better place to be!

“Our Chemo Sabe volunteers astound me with their dedication, not just to patients but to the staff as well,” said Susan Crutchfield, community and physician outreach manager at the Mitchell Cancer Institute. “They seem to lift everyone’s spirits when there, and they have a reciprocal caring relationship with staff.”
