A project to upgrade the elevator system at USA Health University Hospital will significantly reduce wait times, says a hospital facilities official.

Lawrence Gardner, director of facilities management, estimated that the $1.5 million project, when completed, will improve wait times at the hospital’s six elevators by about 35 percent. It is expected to be finished in 16 months.

“The computer will run diagnostics continuously and will pre-dispatch cars based on a history of calls on each floor,” Gardner said. “The speed will be tremendously improved.”

The project calls for replacing computer systems, cables, motors, hoists, brakes and push buttons. Elevator 5 has been upgraded, and Elevator 6 will be completed soon, Gardner said.
