USA Health has named Vernon C. Johnson of Daphne director of security for the health system.

Johnson has more than three decades of experience in federal law enforcement and the U.S. military. He retired in 2018 as chief deputy of the U.S. Marshals Service for the Southern District of Alabama after a 29-year career.

In his new role, Johnson will oversee security for  USA Health, including University Hospital, Children’s & Women’s Hospital, the Strada Patient Care Center and the Mitchell Cancer Institute.

“My goal is for my department to provide the most progressive and adaptive security measures and concepts for both hospitals’ systems, employees, patients and visitors,” Johnson said.

Johnson will oversee more than 30 security staff as they enforce USA Health policy on hospital campuses, and work with USA police, who are sworn law enforcement officers with arrest authority.

“I’m grateful to have Vernon join our team as we continue forging ahead as USA Health,” said Warren Greene, assistant administrator for USA Health. “His wealth of experience in law enforcement and training will help us to quickly achieve several goals, including the development of a comprehensive security plan for all of USA Health.”

As chief deputy of the U.S. Marshals Service in Mobile, Johnson was responsible for directing the day-to-day activities of the Southern District, including overseeing operational and administrative personnel, policies and procedures, and coordinating law enforcement activities with other federal agencies and local law enforcement.

He held a variety of positions in the U.S. Marshals Service, including chief inspector in the Office of Professional Standards, assistant director of the Training Division and chief inspector of the Professional Development training branch. He also was an instructor at the Marshals Training Academy for five years.

Johnson served in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserves for 24 years, including six years in active duty during which he was deployed to Germany and England, and to Turkey for six months during Operation Desert Storm.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Troy State University at Montgomery.

He served on the board of directors for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation Board. He holds memberships in the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Sheriff’s Association, and is a charter member of the Federal Law Enforcement Liaison Officers Association.

Johnson resides in Daphne with his wife, Glenda, who earned a nursing degree from the University of South Alabama. Their daughter, Trinity, will start nursing school at USA this spring, and their son, Solomon, is the head basketball coach at Fairhope High School.
