The All of Us Research Program at USA Health has resumed in-person enrollment after being paused since March 2020, due to restrictions placed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A nationwide research program administered by the National Institutes of Health, the All of Us Research Program seeks to advance individualized prevention, treatment and care for people of all backgrounds. To achieve this goal, program participants will be asked to complete online surveys, share electronic health records, and provide biosamples throughout the duration of the program.

The USA Health Strada Patient Care Center, located at 1601 Center Street, was the first enrollment site to relaunch for in-person activities on March 8, 2021. The recruitment site at USA Health Stanton Road Clinic resumed activities on April 6, 2021.

Both sites are keeping participants and staff safety at the forefront by monitoring local conditions as well as practicing masking, social distancing, limiting capacity, frequently cleaning and sanitizing daily.

As sites reopen, visits will be scheduled by appointment only to allow adequate time to adhere to our strict cleaning protocols while working with participants to complete all of the registration steps.

“Our team members are thrilled to resume in-person enrollment,” said Errol Crook, M.D., Abraham A. Mitchell Professor and Chair of Internal Medicine at the USA College of Medicine, Director of the USA Health Center for Healthy Communities, and Principal Investigator for the All of Us Research Program at USA Health. “Having the opportunity to talk about the All of Us Research Program in-person and welcoming new participants to this important national research program is an honor.”

The All of Us Research Program at USA Health is led by Crook, Allen Perkins, M.D., Professor and Chair of Family Medicine at USA Health and Co-Principal Investigator of the All of Us Research Program; and Martha Arrieta, M.D., Ph.D., Director of Research at the USA Health Center for Healthy Communities and All of Us Research Program Community Engagement Lead.

In addition to the locations in Mobile County re-opening, additional All of Us Research Program sites located within the Southern Network have reopened including the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Louisiana State University, Tulane University, UAB’s Huntsville Regional Medical campus and Selma Family Medicine. Pop-up sites also have relaunched in Montgomery.

Since the program’s beginning in May 2018, more than 1,300 participants have enrolled through USA Health. Overall, more than 23,000 participants have enrolled through the Southern Network in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi combined.

The All of Us Research Program aims to enable discoveries that will improve overall health by encouraging the public to take an active role in steering the future of health research. The national All of Us recruitment goal is 1 million people.

Alabamians age 19 or older, regardless of health status, are eligible to enroll in the program by visiting https://www.joinallofus.org/USA, calling (251) 471-7708, or emailing joinallofus@health.southalabama.edu

In addition to USA Health, the All of Us Southern Network includes the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Cooper Green Mercy Health Services, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Tulane University, Tuskegee University, UAB School of Medicine’s Montgomery Internal Medicine and Selma Family Medicine programs, UAB School of Medicine’s Huntsville Regional Medical Campus, University of Mississippi Medical Center and University Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.

This work is supported by the All of Us Research Program of the National Institutes of Health under award number OT2OD025284.

All of Us is a registered service mark of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
