USA Health trauma surgeon Maryann Mbaka, M.D., FACS, has been chosen for a visiting professorship program in 2024 that is sponsored by the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the Society of Black Academic Surgeons.

Mbaka, an assistant professor of surgery at the Whiddon College of Medicine and associate program director for the General Surgery Residency Program, will serve as a visiting professor at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

“Dr. Mbaka is very deserving of this honor,” said William O. Richards, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Surgery at the Whiddon College of Medicine. “Being chosen for this visiting professorship program not only recognizes her past achievements but also provides an opportunity for her to grow as a leader and further her career.”

The AAST/SBAS Visiting Professorship Program involves a two-day visit during which the visiting professor gives grand rounds and has opportunities for mentorship and involvement with students, residents and faculty.

Mbaka earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and completed her general surgery residency at the University of California San Francisco East Bay. She also completed a trauma and surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
