Breast augmentation uses implants that are placed either over or underneath the chest muscle. Implants consist of a silicone shell filled with a solution of salt water. The implant is inserted through an incision in the armpit, nipple or lower breast.
Breast reduction, also known as mammoplasty, involves removal of excess breast tissue and skin. This procedure preserves breast function while reducing the volume of breast tissue. This procedure is commonly used to treat back and neck pain caused by the weight of heavy breasts.
Breast reconstruction recreates the breast using implants or a patient’s own tissue. Patients who have undergone mastectomy as a part of treatment for breast cancer may choose to have reconstruction surgery.
