“This tournament is more than a great day of golf; it’s a meaningful way to support our mission of providing compassionate, high-quality care to the communities we serve,” said Rick Metzger, MMHC, BSN, CEO of USA Health Providence Hospital.
Richard J. Gualtieri, M.D., brings a wealth of experience to the health system, with clinical expertise spanning general oncology — particularly lung, breast, and colorectal cancers — as well as blood cancers and nonmalignant blood disorders.
“Academic medicine allows me to stay involved in teaching, engage in research and continue evolving as a clinician. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of a community that values curiosity, collaboration, and a shared pursuit of excellence,” said Gerardo Eman, M.D.
“Research consistently shows that camps and recreational programs are essential therapeutic interventions that can improve health outcomes, emotional well-being, and quality of life for children and their families,” said Kim Thompson-Yates, who leads the Mapp Child and Family Life Program.
Funded by a grant from the Alabama Department of Public Health, LAPOP operates through a mobile RV clinic that travels to Mobile, Baldwin, Clarke, Conecuh, Washington, and Escambia counties.
The event, now a local tradition, brings together cancer survivors, loved ones, and community members for a morning of movement, remembrance, and celebration.
“This is an exciting step forward in understanding how ovarian cancer cells thrive in the acidic environments that tumors create,” said Kevin Lee, Ph.D., assistant professor of research for gynecologic oncology at MCI, and corresponding author of the study.
“My husband and I are so thankful to the entire medical team and staff at Children’s & Women’s for taking such great care of our little girl,” Lauren Mueller said. “They provided so much medical, mental and emotional support throughout the entire process and we are so grateful to everyone who took care of us.”
Informed by research, the summer outreach is part of year-round efforts initiated by Children’s & Women’s Hospital to share education and keep kids safe.

Rachel Seaman, M.D., will partner with University Hospital CEO Josh Snow, MSHA, to provide clinical leadership and oversight, establish evidence-based practices and collaborate with others to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.
