USA Health has appointed Rajab Idriss, M.D., as interim medical director of hepatology, offering continued access to advanced liver care for patients in southwest Alabama and the Gulf Coast region.

Idriss, a board-certified gastroenterologist and fellowship-trained hepatologist with more than five years of clinical experience at USA Health, has built a well-established practice focused on the diagnosis and management of complex liver diseases, and his leadership will support continued growth of hepatology services across the region.

With a specialist in liver disease on staff, patients will continue to receive expert, coordinated care closer to home, reducing the need to travel outside the region for evaluation and treatment.

“Expanding access through the Digestive Health clinic and the Mapp clinic will significantly improve care for patients in our region by making specialized hepatology services more available, timely, and coordinated,” Idriss said. “Patients with chronic liver disease often require close monitoring, frequent follow-ups, and rapid adjustments in management.”

Under Idriss’ direction, USA Health is enhancing access to care in multiple locations:

  • The Digestive Health Center in Mobile continues to accept new hepatology referrals.
  • New patient appointments are available in Baldwin County at the Mapp Family Campus clinic in Fairhope, which makes care more convenient for patients who live on the Eastern Shore.

“By increasing clinic capacity and access points, patients can be seen earlier in the course of disease, reducing delays in diagnosis and treatment,” Idriss said. “This helps prevent progression to advanced liver disease, decreases avoidable hospitalizations, and improves overall continuity of care. In addition, local access reduces the burden of travel to distant transplant centers, which can be a major barrier for many patients, leading to better adherence and engagement in care.”

USA Health also continues to maintain strong relationships with leading transplant centers, including the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Ochsner Health, and Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. These partnerships ensure seamless coordination for patients who require advanced therapies or liver transplantation.
