We're Using Deep Brain Stimulation to Relieve Tremors

Through Deep Brain Stimulation surgery at USA Health, a team of neurologists and neurosurgeons are implementing nodes into the brain to relieve tremors.

John Chessher suffered with essential tremors for nearly 30 years. At their worst, they prevented him from even drinking a cup of coffee or eating a hamburger. He couldn't write his name without holding one hand in the other. His wife and teenage daughter had to help him with everything, and the former truck driver couldn't even drive.

Through Deep Brain Stimulation surgery at the USA Health University Hospital, John has received relief from the worst of his tremor. A team of neurologists and neurosurgeons from USA Physicians Group conducted brain surgery and pinpointed the exact spot needing help in John's brain. The team implanted nodes during the surgery, and they were connected to an external battery pack. As soon as the device was turned on, the relief was instantaneous. For the first time in 30 years, John's hand didn't shake. He and his wife teared up and hugged.

This technology also can help Parkinson's patients. For more information on Deep Brain Stimulation surgery or other services offered by the USA Physicians Group, please call (251) 660-5108.
