Patients and staff gathered in the courtyard on Thursday, Dec. 1, for the annual tree lighting ceremony at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital. The 50-foot-tree was lit promptly at 6 p.m. for the first time this season.

This year, 11-year-old Kyler Hall, who has been a patient at Children’s & Women’s Hospital for the past five months, had the honor of flipping the switch, illuminating the more than 350,000 lights on the tree at the ceremony.

His hospital room, located on the top floor of the children’s tower, boasts the perfect view of the massive tree positioned just outside of his window. To add to the holiday spirit, his room is decked out with lights, a 3-foot tree and a festive wreath on the window.

“His favorite holiday is Christmas,” said his mom, Tracy. “He even calls himself one of Santa’s elves.”

Hall, who has an extensive Christmas list filled with outdoor and hunting gear, is hoping to be able to go home for Christmas – even for just one night. “I wanted to make his room special for him,” Tracy added. “Having Kyler attend this event, flip the switch and having such a great view of the tree is really helping to lift his spirits and bring him some Christmas joy.”
