Children’s & Women’s Hospital will mark 100 days without a serious safety event this week as USA Health makes progress toward creating a culture of safety.

“We couldn’t have accomplished this without everyone being committed to safety and using our safety behaviors and tools,” said Becky Pomrenke, R.N., M.S.N., patient safety manager for USA Health. “Everyone worked as a team, had each other’s backs and put our patients first.”

A serious safety event is a deviation in care that reaches the patient and causes severe temporary or permanent harm, up to and including death.

In the past several months, thousands of employees at USA Health have completed safety training classes as part of the Safety Starts With Me initiative. The initiative was launched in July 2021 with the goals of creating a culture of safety and adopting a mindset of zero harm.

The classes covered topics such as how humans perform and make mistakes, professional communication and the importance of speaking up for safety and protecting those who do.

“Patient safety is a culture change, so it is a long road. We are making great progress,” Pomrenke said. “Celebrating our successes keeps people engaged and shows that their hard work is paying off.”
