Bees are a small but powerful life force, working together with dedication, collaboration and a strong sense of community. They are the inspiration for this month’s Bee A Donor! campaign by Donate Life America, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of registering as an organ, eye and tissue donor, and learning about living donations.

Employees at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital joined the campaign during April by participating in rock-painting, poster-coloring and chalk-drawing contests. They also raised a special flag in front of the hospital.

The surgery/pediatric acute care unit (PACU) won the overall spirit award during the campaign. Winners of the rock-painting contest were the pediatric intensive care unit, first place; cardio-pulmonary, second place; surgery/PACU, third place; and labor and delivery, fourth place. The pediatric emergency department won first place in the poster-coloring contest followed by radiology, second place; surgery/PACU, third place; and PICU, fourth place. Chalk-drawing awards went to surgery/PACU, first place; and spiritual care, second place.

One organ donor can save up to eight lives, restore sight to two people through cornea donation, and heal more than 75 lives through tissue donation, according to Donate Life America. Living donors can provide a kidney or a portion of their liver to a waiting patient. It’s estimated that more than 100,000 people are waiting for lifesaving organ transplants.

To participate in organ, eye and tissue donation:

  • Register your decision to be a donor at RegisterMe.org. (Living donation is not included in your donor registration.)
  • Tell your family and friends about your decision.
  • Visit DonateLife.net to learn more and find ways to champion the cause.
