Swallow Studies

At USA Health, we use a swallow study to diagnose digestive health issues such as ulcers, tumors, swallowing disorders, polyps, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and hiatal hernias. During this procedure, patients swallow a barium preparation that can be seen on an X-ray. During the study, several X-rays are taken so that your specialists can see how the material moves through your digestive system and detect any abnormalities in the digestive tract. The X-ray results are read by a radiologist before consulting with your doctor. Treatment for problems revealed during a swallow study vary depending on your diagnosis.
