About the program

USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute (MCI) offers free prostate cancer screenings for uninsured and underinsured men across Lower Alabama through a partnership with the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) Prostate Cancer Prevention Program.

The Lower Alabama Prostate Outreach Program is led by MCI’s Cancer Control and Prevention (CCP) team and funded through a grant by the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH). The program covers screening through a PSA test for eligible participants, plus follow-up care for abnormal PSA test results.

Eligible participants include uninsured and underinsured men age 50 to 69 and men age 40 to 49 who are considered high risk.

Community health outreach van

Prostate cancer screening clinic comes directly to you

The USA Health Mobile Clinic travels to local churches and community locations throughout Mobile and surrounding areas, providing convenient access to care. Each event is staffed by a team of medical professionals and includes screening equipment and light refreshments.

Men interested in being screened will first be evaluated for eligibility. Those who meet qualifications will be registered and have a blood sample collected by trained medical staff. Participants will also receive information about prostate cancer, the importance of screening, and next steps for receiving their Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test results.

After the screening:

  • All participants receive their PSA results by phone, mail, and/or email
  • Normal results are mailed to the address provided at registration, with a recommendation to follow up annually with a primary care provider
  • Abnormal results are referred to USA Health Urology. The ADPH Prostate Cancer Prevention Program also covers the cost of a follow-up office visit, including counseling to review results and discuss next steps. If medically necessary, the program also covers the cost of a biopsy and pathology services.
