The Bassam Omar, M.D., Ph.D., Cardiovascular Disease Research and Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2024 to provide future funding for cardiovascular research and scholarly activities to all learners at the University of South Alabama who wish to promote the educational and research missions in the field of cardiology within the Whiddon College of Medicine, the Department of Internal Medicine, and the Division of Cardiology. This endowment will provide the current and future cardiology fellowship program directors financial support to promote scholarly activities as they see fit, as well as provide a means for current and future fellowship graduates to give back to the training program responsible for their invaluable training and successful careers.
The income generated by the principal of the Bassam Omar, M.D., Ph.D., Cardiovascular Disease Research and Scholarship Endowment Fund will be administered by the chair of the Department of Internal Medicine with approval from the dean of the Whiddon College of Medicine.
The income generated by the principal of the Bassam Omar, M.D., Ph.D., Cardiovascular Disease Research and Scholarship Endowment Fund shall be used to provide funding for the Division of Cardiology. The University shall make all distributions only from the income of the fund. However, if the earnings in the fund are insufficient to fund the award in full, or if the value of the fund is below the historic dollar value of the fund, then distributions from principal may or may not be made, as determined by the Endowment and Investments Committee of the Board of Trustees.
