
Supporting patients through Volunteer Services donations
Those who wish to contribute are encouraged to review the donation guidelines below to ensure all items meet hospital standards for safety, privacy, and infection control.
University Hospital Volunteer Services plays an important role in supporting patients who are admitted unexpectedly or require extended hospital stays. By providing comfort items and essentials, Volunteer Services helps patients feel cared for during challenging times.
Employees who wish to contribute are encouraged to review the donation guidelines below to ensure all items meet hospital standards for safety, privacy, and infection control.
Acceptable donation items
Volunteer Services gladly accepts the following new, unused items:
- Adult coloring and activity books, including word search, crossword puzzles, and color-by-number books
- Coloring pencils, crayons, and markers
- Individually packaged toothbrushes, travel-size toothpaste, and dental floss
- Hairbrushes and combs
- Travel-size shampoo and conditioner
- Lip balm, travel-size lotion, and deodorant
- Adult slippers and socks with grippers
- Small stuffed animals and teddy bears
- Blankets
- Gift cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amazon, gas, and restaurants)
- Earbuds and headphones
- Reading materials, including reading glasses, books, and magazines
Items we are unable to accept
For patient safety and comfort, the following items cannot be accepted:
- Opened or used items
- Food
- Greeting cards for patients
- Items depicting violence
- Sharp, breakable, or wooden items
- Items exposed to cigarette smoke, animals, or perfume
- Direct monetary gifts for individuals
Note: Monetary donations may be made to University Hospital through USA Health Development by calling 251-460-7032 or donating online.
Frequently asked questions
May I deliver my donation directly to patients?
No. Personal deliveries are not permitted due to privacy, safety, and infection control considerations.
Where and how do I deliver my donation?
Donations are accepted at Volunteer Services Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is recommended to call 251-471-7266 to ensure someone will be available to accept the donation.
Can someone pick up my donation?
Scheduled delivery to the hospital is preferred. However, volunteer staff may be able to arrange a pickup upon request.
May I receive a tax deduction letter for an in-kind donation?
Volunteer Services will provide a thank-you letter acknowledging your gift.
