The University of South Alabama Athletics has appointed USA Health sports medicine physician Peter Rippey, M.D., CAQSM, as the new intercollegiate athletics medical director. Rippey, an assistant professor of family medicine at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine, is entering his sixth year working with the Jaguars as a team physician.

"Since 2021, Dr. Rippey has served as a team physician for South Alabama Athletics," said Jinni Frisbey, senior associate athletic director, senior woman administrator and Title IX coordinator. "We are grateful for his service, and we look forward to the expertise and vision he will bring to this important role as the intercollegiate athletics medical director."

Rippey, who joined USA Health in 2021, is program director for the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at the university’s health system.

He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Missouri in occupational therapy. After two years of practice as an OT, Rippey returned to Missouri’s School of Medicine for medical school. He completed his residency in family medicine and a fellowship in sports medicine at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Rippey has provided sports medicine services at a multitude of local and national events including the Daytona 500, US Tennis, Rock N' Roll Marathon and the 2022 World Games. In 2024, he represented the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) as one of three U.S. designees during a prestigious two-week travel fellowship in Canada.
