Nearly 100 USA Health team members – from physicians, nurses and therapists to environmental services staff and nutritionists – were recognized for their often life-changing care during A Night Honoring Healers, presented by the USA Foundation at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
Hundreds of guests gathered to hear the remarkable stories of USA Health care teams in action as they provided compassionate care for patients. During the program, each designated healer was recognized and received a medal.
“USA Health’s dedicated employees – more than 7,300 now – support our mission to help people lead longer, better lives,” said Natalie Fox, DNP, chief executive officer for USA Health. “They bring their expertise and their heart for patient-centered care to work every single day, where they make a difference in the lives of those they serve.”
In 2017, USA Health began formally recognizing its healthcare heroes, including those in the community who contribute to patient care. This year, two patient stories were shared.
Fox also offered a tribute to the late Shelia Ross, DNP, and officially dedicated the evening to the former comprehensive stroke director for USA Health. Ross’ husband, Jay, and other family and friends created an endowment to honor her legacy and continue the important work in stroke education she was passionate about.
Following the tribute, two videos were presented to show the impact that thousands of USA Health team members have every day on the lives of patients and their families.
The first video presentation focused on Sandi Reeves, a mother and grandmother who faced a life-changing challenge requiring surgical intervention. Her health issues led her to USA Health and eventually to Richard Menger, M.D., MPA, a neurosurgeon and chief of complex spine surgery at the academic health system. He and his team performed a successful complex spine reconstruction surgery on Reeves at University Hospital, and she is now able to enjoy more time with her children and grandchildren.
The second patient video told the story of expectant mother Amber Young. When Young arrived at Children’s & Women’s Hospital to deliver her son in April, the day took an unexpected and critical turn. What happened next was a powerful example of teamwork, skill, and compassion. Young, her son, her husband, and other family members joined her on stage at the end of the evening to thank the healers who saved her life.
You can still make an impact. USA Health is advancing medicine through education, research and community outreach. We appreciate your consideration of a charitable gift of any amount to support our mission. Make a year-end gift today.
