The USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute has received a donation of $47,900 for its MCI Excellence Fund.

The gift includes $23,900 in proceeds from the recent Piggly Wiggly Golf Tournament in Mobile and a matching donation from longtime MCI supporter Abraham A. Mitchell.

“Cancer touches my heart,” said K.C. Constantine, president of Manning Inc. Piggly Wiggly. “We are totally local, and we support local causes.” The company operates 14 grocery stores in Mobile and Baldwin counties employing more than 600 people.

The Piggly Wiggly Golf Tournament was held July 15 at Heron Lakes Country Club in Mobile, drawing more than 100 participants.

“We are grateful for the support of Piggly Wiggly and Mr. Mitchell, and their commitment to furthering advancements in cancer research and treatment happening right here at the Mitchell Cancer Institute,” said Caroline Smith, director of medical affairs development at the University of South Alabama.

The MCI Excellence Fund steers donations to where the need is greatest at the Mitchell Cancer Institute, the only academic cancer treatment and research facility along the upper Gulf Coast. The Excellence Fund supports leading-edge cancer care, cancer research, clinical research studies, patient assistance and patient-centered services such as the Supportive Care Clinic, patient navigation, genetic counseling, patient nutrition and cancer support groups.
