USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute is inviting survivors, families, caregivers and anyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer to join its team for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 8 a.m. at Spanish Plaza, 401 Government St., in downtown Mobile.

MCI’s team, 9 to 5: Million Reasons to Hope, takes its name and inspiration from Dolly Parton, the country music legend known perhaps even more for her generosity and optimism than for her hit tunes. Sheila Dorgan, MPA, associate manager of patient supportive care services at MCI, says, “We honor Dolly Parton because she believed in lifting others up and helping those in need. Her legacy reminds us that even in life's most difficult moments, caring hearts and supportive communities can make a meaningful difference for individuals and families facing a cancer diagnosis.”

Walkers are encouraged to embrace the theme by dressing as Dolly, whether they go all out with big blonde wigs, sequins and fringe or simply add a touch of Dolly flair. With the walk falling on Halloween this year, the costume can do double duty.

Behind the rhinestones is a serious purpose. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, and about 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with it during their lifetime. Nearly everyone knows someone who has faced the disease, whether a mother, sister, friend or coworker.

For MCI’s doctors, nurses and staff, many of whom care for breast cancer patients every day, the walk is a chance to show support for patients, survivors and families outside the clinic walls, and to walk alongside them. “This is a wonderful opportunity to come together, support cancer research and patient services and make a meaningful impact within our community,” says Dorgan.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer events in the nation. Funds raised will support the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research, as well as patient services such as free rides to treatment, free lodging near treatment centers and a 24/7 cancer helpline. Each year, the Mobile event draws thousands of survivors, caregivers, families and supporters to downtown Mobile.

The walk is open to participants of all ages and fitness levels. Anyone who would like to walk with MCI can register and join the team. Those who cannot attend can support the effort by making a donation.
