Free car seat checks by USA Health certified techs on Sept. 23

Parents and caregivers have an opportunity later this week to ensure their children’s car seats are properly installed. More than a dozen certified car seat safety technicians will be on hand Friday, Sept. 23, at the USA Health Strada Patient Care Center offering free inspections from noon until 3 p.m.
During car seat inspections, all improperly installed car seats are removed and checked for expiration dates and possible damage. The event will be located in the lower-level parking lot of the Strada Patient Care Center, 1601 Center Street in Mobile, close to the Geri Moulton Children’s Park.

Unfortunately, motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for children. Research shows that 46% of car seats are not used correctly. Using age- and size-appropriate car seats and installing them correctly are the best ways to reduce crash fatalities among children, safety experts say.
Each year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration holds Child Passenger Safety Week, which runs from Sept. 18-24. Safety Week features national seat check events, a way for parents and caregivers to receive free instruction on how to correctly install and use the proper car seats for their children.
Technicians help determine if children are in the right seat for their age and size, and explain the importance of registering car seats with the manufacturers so owners can be notified if there is a recall.
