DeVyn Coker was 7 years old when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or ALL, in March 2024. Soon after, the Saraland Elementary student began an intensive treatment regimen that would come to include dozens of rounds of chemotherapy, some 60 spinal taps and countless nights in the hospital.

Through it all, the little girl with a bright smile remained known for her joyful spirit. She sang to her mother and sisters during treatments, joked with her care team, and often checked on other children receiving care.

On Aug. 13, about 29 months after the initial diagnosis, and surrounded by family, friends, and caregivers at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital, DeVyn rang the bell inside the Hope infusion center to symbolize the completion of her treatment for cancer.

Physicians released confetti cannons that rained down a shower of gold. Her mom and dad cried tears of joy. After ringing the bell, DeVyn clasped her hand over her mouth, overcome by emotion. Her mom hugged her, then her dad scooped her up and raised her above the crowd of well-wishers.

For her family, the moment was a celebration of perseverance, faith, and the support of a community that rallied around them throughout the battle.

DeVyn’s experience has also made her an advocate for other children facing cancer. She was selected as a Children’s & Women’s Hospital’s Children’s Miracle Network Champion, representing pediatric patients and helping raise awareness and support for oncology care. Her family also launched a foundation, DeVyn’s Delegation, to help support other children battling illnesses.

Throughout treatment, her parents, Brittany Williams Coker and DuVon Coker, have spoken of their daughter’s strength and determination: “She is the strongest and most gracious warrior we know.”
