To give parents and caregivers practical tools to help protect children, prevent injuries and promote healthy habits, USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital hosted its second annual Child Safety Day on Saturday, April 4, in Spanish Fort.

Families were offered free education and resources focused on keeping children safe and healthy during the event held at the Spanish Fort Community Center. Besides free child safety seat inspections, children who attended were fitted for and received free life jackets through a grant funded by the Gulf Coast RC&D Council.

Pediatricians from Children's & Women's Hospital spoke with families about a range of safety topics, including electric bike and scooter safety. Representatives from Baldwin County agencies shared safety tips and led family-friendly activities, including tours of emergency vehicles.

“It’s so gratifying to be able to share safety information with children and families before an accident happens,” said Courtney Thomson, RN-NIC, who led the event. “So many accidents with little ones that we see come through the Pediatric Emergency Center are preventable. So, one of our driving goals with outreach events such as this is to help prepare parents and caregivers for many of the hazards they may encounter with their children.”

Children’s & Women’s Hospital in Mobile is home to the region’s only Pediatric Emergency Center open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and staffed with specially trained emergency medicine physicians and other providers.
