USA Health would like to thank everyone who participated in the “Halloween Bleed for Your Team” blood drive. The drive was held Wednesday, Nov. 11, and Thursday, Nov. 12. During those two days, 41 units of blood were donated.

The blood drive was held at the Toulminville branch of the Mobile Public Library, across the street from University Hospital, and was administered by LifeSouth Community Blood Donors. Donors received free T-shirts and meal tickets, along with candy and snacks as a thank-you for their donations.

Blood is a precious commodity for hospitals as it cannot be manufactured or artificially made. It only can be obtained from donors, and an estimated 10 percent of those eligible to donate blood actually do so annually. A single blood donation has the potential to save multiple lives, and donations are needed to treat people with illnesses such as cancer and sickle cell disease.
