Jimmy Shumock named 2024 Alabama Hospital Association Trustee of the Year
“Jimmy Shumock has made an incredible impact on our organization and our community, and many lives have been affected in a positive way because of his leadership and hard work.”
Jimmy Shumock, a member of the University of South Alabama Board of Trustees and chairman of the USA Health Board of Advisors, was recently named the 2024 Trustee of the Year by the Alabama Hospital Association.
This recognition, presented at the annual Alabama Healthcare Leadership Summit in Birmingham, celebrates Shumock's enduring dedication to healthcare and our state. Appointed in 2010 to the USA Board of Trustees, he most recently served as chair pro temp. He now chairs the Health Affairs Committee.
"Jimmy truly epitomizes servant leadership," said USA President Jo Bonner. "His vision and strong work ethic have helped guide USA Health through a critical period of growth and expansion. The Alabama Gulf Coast is truly a better place because of him.”
In May 2023, Shumock was named chair of the newly created Board of Advisors for USA Health. Since then, he has taken an active role in providing governance for the rapidly growing and expanding academic health system, said John V. Marymont, M.D., M.B.A., Dean of the Whiddon College of Medicine, and Vice President of Academic Affairs, noting that Shumock works closely with senior leadership and other board members to offer input and make recommendations on key issues.
“In every meeting,” Marymont said, “Jimmy’s leadership, wisdom, and wise counsel have been extremely important and effective.”
Recognized as Chair Pro Tempore Emeritus by the USA Board of Trustees in June 2022, Shumock's guidance extends beyond the USA family and underscores his commitment to advance his community. Throughout his career, he has been involved in a variety of local initiatives including the Mobile Area Sports Commission, Coastal Conservation Association, Mobile Preschool for the Sensory Impaired, Mobile Baykeeper, Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, Mobile Jaycees, Greater Gulf State Fair, Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, and Leadership Mobile, among others.
“Jimmy has made an incredible impact on our organization and our community, and many lives have been affected in a positive way because of his leadership and hard work,” said Owen Bailey, MSHA, FACHE, USA Health CEO and senior associate vice president for Medical Affairs. “He is a person of great integrity and vision, and his support of USA and USA Health are truly appreciated.”
