USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute (MCI) employees will lace up their sneakers, and perhaps don a pair of rhinestone boots, to raise funds for breast cancer research.

MCI invites all USA Health and University of South Alabama employees to join the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Saturday, Oct. 31, in downtown Mobile.

MCI’s team, 9 to 5 Million Reasons to Hope, takes its name and inspiration from Dolly Parton, the country music legend known perhaps even more for her generosity and optimism as for her tunes. In keeping with the theme, participants are encouraged to dress as Dolly for the event. Team members are welcome to go all out with big blonde wigs, sequins and fringe, or simply add a touch of Dolly flair to their walking attire. With the event falling on Halloween this year, the costume can do double duty.

Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer among women in the United States, and about 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with it during their lifetime. For the team at MCI, many of whom care for breast cancer patients every day, the walk is a chance to show support for patients, survivors and families outside the clinic walls.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer events in the nation. Funds raised through the walks support the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research, as well as patient services such as free rides to treatment, free lodging near treatment centers and a 24/7 cancer helpline. Each year, the Mobile event draws thousands of survivors, caregivers, families and supporters to downtown Mobile.

Sheila Dorgan, MPA, associate manager of patient supportive care services at MCI, says, “This is a wonderful opportunity to come together as a team, support cancer research and patient services, and make a meaningful impact within our community. We hope you will consider joining us and helping make this event a success.”

Participants of all fitness levels are welcome, and friends and family members are invited to join as well.

Employees who would like to participate can register and join the team online at Team 9 to 5 Million Reasons to Hope. Those who cannot attend can still support the effort by making a donation through the team page.
