USA Health expands with addition of new GI cancer specialist
Ahmed Abdalla, M.D., brings a special interest in gastrointestinal malignancies and phase 1 clinical trials to the Mitchell Cancer Institute.
USA Health is expanding its oncology care team with the addition of Ahmed Abdalla, M.D., a medical oncologist who will see patients at the USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute, the region’s only academic cancer research and treatment center.
Abdalla, who also will serve as an assistant professor of interdisciplinary clinical oncology at the MCI, has a special interest in gastrointestinal malignancies and phase 1 clinical trials. He recently completed a fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at Ascension St. John Hospital/Van Elslander Cancer Center in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. Abdalla also underwent six months of training in investigational drug development at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
“I am eager to help in the care of cancer patients in Mobile.” Abdalla said. “I also am thrilled to be part of the oncology program to help train fellows to become future oncologists.”
Abdalla received his bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery, the international equivalent of an M.D., at the University of Khartoum College of Medicine in Khartoum, Sudan. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan, where he served as chief resident for patient safety, quality improvement and research.
Abdalla is a member of multiple professional organizations including the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
