USA Health urologist Lorie G. Fleck, M.D., FACS, FPMRS, has been elected a trustee of the American Board of Urology.
She was nominated for the six-year term by the American Association of Clinical Urologists (AACU), one of six urologic societies that nominate trustees to the ABU.
“I am honored and humbled to be elected to this position,” said Fleck, director of the urology residency program at USA Health and an associate professor of urology at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama. “The ABU has played a vital role in shaping the standards of our profession, and having the opportunity to give back in this way is incredibly meaningful to me. I’m grateful for the trust of my peers and excited to support the next generation of urologists.”
The ABU certifies urologists who meet their educational, professional, and examination criteria, including competency in various domains of urology.
“Those of us who work alongside Dr. Fleck know how deeply committed she is to advancing the field of urology,” said Christopher Keel, D.O., FACS, chair of the Department of Urology at the Whiddon College of Medicine. “This is a much-deserved honor and a reflection of the respect she has earned across the urologic community.”
Fleck is active in several professional organizations, including the AACU, the American Urologic Association (AUA), the Society of Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU), and the Society of Women in Urology (SWIU).
Fleck is the immediate past president of the Southeastern Section of the AUA and was the first woman to be elected president. She has also served as chairman of the health policy committee. The Southeastern Section is the largest of the AUA’s eight regions comprising almost 2,100 urologists practicing in nine Southeastern states, Panama, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Fleck serves as the AUA’s specialty society representative to the American College of Surgeons and the AUA state advocacy committee. She is a board member, annual meeting coordinator and health policy liaison for the Alabama Urology Network. In addition, she serves as secretary-treasurer of the AACU.
Fleck was one of the first two urologists in the Mobile area to earn subspecialty board certification in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. She also was the first female urology resident to train at the Medical College of Georgia in Athens. She worked in private practice in Mobile before joining USA Health in 2018.
Fleck received her bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of Georgia and her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia.
Her practice focuses on female and male voiding dysfunction and incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and reconstructive surgeries for fistulas and trauma.
