SouthCEP: The Comprehensive Epilepsy Program

At USA Health, our neurologists provide a unique level of specialized care to patients with epilepsy by using advanced technology and an interdisciplinary approach. We bring together specialists from multiple disciplines to collaborate on individualized epilepsy treatments for each patient. This team includes epileptologists (neurologists specially trained to treat people with epilepsy), neurosurgeons, neuropathologists and nurses who specialize in epilepsy treatment.

At USA Health, our care is driven and powered by academic medical center breakthroughs. We use advances in diagnosis at our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit to pinpoint the areas of the brain that are causing patient seizures. Through a combination of medication and leading-edge surgical techniques, we provide a customized treatment plan for our patients to help them live their lives as free as possible from the effects of epileptic seizures.

NAEC Level 4 Epilepsy Center

The USA Health Comprehensive Epilepsy Program is accredited by the NAEC as a level 4 epilepsy center. Level 4 epilepsy centers have the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest level medical and surgical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.

Comprehensive Epilepsy Program Services

Epilepsy is a complex medical condition that requires a full spectrum of diagnostic and treatment tools. At USA Health, we provide:

Intercranial Video-EEG Monitoring

The test uses electrodes under the skull to detect and measure the brain’s electrical activity.

EEG Source Analysis and Imaging Co-registration

With this study, our team analyzes which zones in the brain are responsible for epileptic activity.

Investigational Drug Trials

A clinical trial seeks to determine the efficacy of new drugs such as anti-seizure medication.

Wada Testing

This diagnostic test helps reveal which side of the patient’s brain controls language.

Neuropsychological Evaluation

The test evaluates the relationship between brain function and the patient's behavior.

MRI/PET Scan

This combination diagnostic scan provides a more detailed view of the patient’s brain.

Vagus Nerve Stimulator Implantation

Just as a pacemaker regulates and corrects abnormal heart rhythms, this implantable device can help patients for whom medication is insufficient to control seizures.

Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS) Device Implantation

Similar to a vagus nerve stimulator, this implantable device provides custom brain stimulation when needed for patients whose seizures are not sufficiently managed by medication.

Language and Functional Mapping

This test is done before surgery to ensure that a brain resectioning procedure does not damage areas of the brain essential to language and other vital functions.

Intraoperative Monitoring and Electrocorticography

Similar to the purpose of language and functional mapping, this test is done during surgery to prevent any unnecessary damage to the brain during a resection.

Scalp Video-EEG Monitoring

To determine if a seizure is epileptic or not, this diagnostic test uses electrodes attached to the scalp to detect and measure the brain’s electrical activity.

Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

At USA Health, we offer a unique level of epilepsy care and treatment in part because of our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) at University Hospital. The EMU allows neurologists and other epilepsy specialists to monitor patients more closely so that a more advanced diagnosis and treatment can be developed. This unique environment features six monitored beds where our team can conduct long-term video EEG (electroencephalogram) monitoring as well as sleep recording.

In addition to helping patients with epilepsy, we also treat individuals facing non-epileptic seizure disorders, syncope (temporary loss of consciousness), stroke and sleep disorders.
