Chair's Message

At the University of South Alabama College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry we are proud of our commitment to providing outstanding clinical care to our patients and a superior education to our psychiatry residents and students. This is accomplished through our collaboration with AltaPointe Health Systems, the second largest community behavioral health provider in the southeast.  Our residents are exposed to virtually every type of psychiatric condition as well as to a culturally diverse patient population.

Our faculty are knowledgeable in the most current information regarding the diagnosis and treatment of the mentally ill including the neuroscience of psychiatry and evidence based psychiatric treatment.  This expertise in clinical care, coupled with our research interests and commitment to education, forms the foundation of our dedication to preparing residents and students who will be among the best clinicians in the country. 

Our broad variety of clinical experiences, ranging from our College Counseling Center to treating the most serious and chronically mentally ill, from treating children with developmental disabilities to the elderly with serious depression, from using the latest psychopharmacological protocols to telepsychiatry, prepare our residents and students for the assessment and treatment of all types of patients in virtually any setting. Our psychiatric consultation service is well respected by our non-psychiatrist medical peers with a focus on remembering we are  physicians first; physicians with expertise on the impact of physical illness on mental and emotional well-being and vice versa.

Because we are a small program our residents, students, and faculty have an extremely close collegial working relationship. On all services our residents and faculty work side by side in their care of patients in a positive learning environment aimed at enhancing the professional development of all of our trainees. We emphasize both biological and psychotherapeutic modes of psychiatric treatment based on a biopsychosocial model of psychiatry. In addition to the ACGME core requirements, we are able to individually help each trainee meet their personal educational goals. Each resident chooses a faculty mentor based on shared interests. Residents interested in becoming future academicians, public policy leaders or administrators, may be assigned additional mentors.
