About our Clinic

The USA Pediatric Gastroenterology Clinic sees pediatric patients from birth through 17 years of age.

Many GI problems may be treated easily by the child's primary care physician, but more complicated GI problems are referred to pediatric gastroenterology.

Currently, three doctors and one nurse practitioner see patients in the USA Pediatric GI Clinic. There is 24 hour/day access to one of these four providers for patients who have been seen in the clinic and for referring primary care physicians. The three doctors perform all procedures and see hospitalized patients at USA Children's & Women's Hospital.

The most common procedures performed (or interpreted) by pediatric gastroenterology include:

  • Upper endoscopy (looking into the esophagus and stomach with a light and taking small biopsies)
  • Lower endoscopy (looking into the large intestine with a light and taking small biopsies)
  • 24-hour pH study (measuring how much reflux of acid from the stomach to the esophagus occurs in 24 hours)
  • Esophageal and anorectal manometry (measuring pressures in the esophagus and rectum)
  • Liver biopsy (taking a piece of liver tissue with a needle)
  • Lactose breath hydrogen test (finding out if the child has lactose intolerance)
  • Urea breath test (finding out if the stomach is infected with a bacteria called H. pylori that can cause stomach ulcers)
