USA's Comprehensive Epilepsy Program (SouthCEP) and Neuroscience Center delivers the most advanced epilepsy care in the region through our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) at the USA Medical Center.

The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit is operated by the USA Department of Neurology. The Unit is a collaborative environment that provides unique and highly specialized care with state-of-the-art technology for patients with epilepsy and other neurological conditions. Care and services include:

  • Diagnostic studies
  • Aggressive medical management
  • Epilepsy surgery
  • Vagus nerve stimulation
  • Brain stimulation device implantation
  • New investigational therapies

The SouthCEP Program

At the University of South Alabama, SouthCEP offers the latest technology for patients with seizure including long-term video EEG monitoring and sleep recording. The unit has six monitored beds suited to diagnose and manage patients with related neurological conditions including seizure disorders, syncope, stroke and sleep disorders. The SouthCEP team is made up of professionals including epileptologists, neurosurgeons, neuropathology and specialized nurses who are involved in the care of each patient.

Advanced Technology

Our advanced technology allows us to localize seizure origin and correlate with real brain MR images. We also have advanced seizure detection software capable of identifying a seizure when it happens. Our epilepsy program is unique in that it is built on the interdisciplinary concept of bringing together leaders in their fields. Our physicians are all members of the USA College of Medicine faculty, and as such are actively involved in teaching and research in addition to delivering medical care.
