About Michael Finan, M.D.
Michael A. Finan, M.D., the Abraham A. Mitchell Chair, he is also senior staff physician in the division of gynecologic oncology and associate director for clinical affairs at MCI, as well as professor of interdisciplinary clinical oncology at the USA College of Medicine.
Dr. Finan's primary research interest is early detection of ovarian cancer based on analysis of the proteomic profile of Pap fluid in women with an adnexal mass. He was a co-investigator on an R-01 grant to study this new screening/triage test for ovarian cancer. Dr. Finan is a co-inventor on six patent filings related to this screening technology. His research has been recognized by The Society of Pelvic Surgeons, who recognized his work with the Eugene Bricker Award for outstanding research.
The first gynecologist in Mobile to perform robotic surgery, Dr. Finan is listed in U.S. News and World Report's Top Doctors directory. He is an associate member of the National Cancer Institute’s Early Detection Research Network. He also collaborates with other MCI oncologists in the early detection of gynecologic cancers. Dr. Finan is author or co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts.
Dr. Finan earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University College of Medicine in Shreveport. He completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of South Florida in Tampa and then completed a gynecologic oncology fellowship at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, also in Tampa. Prior to joining USA in 2005, he served as director of the obstetrics and gynecology residency program at Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans.
Finan served in many leadership roles including chief of the division of gynecologic oncology and interim director for MCI.
