About John W. Smith

In April 2021, the Executive Committee of the University of South Alabama Board of Trustees asked Executive Vice President John W. Smith to serve as acting president, after President Tony Waldrop announced his retirement.

Dr. Smith came to the University of South Alabama in February 2008 as Vice President for Student Affairs. In 2010, in addition to his duties as Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Smith was appointed Special Assistant to President V. Gordon Moulton. The Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Smith Acting President in 2013, where he served until Dr. Tony Waldrop was named President in 2014. Dr. Smith was named Executive Vice President in 2014.

Prior to joining the University of South Alabama, Dr. Smith had extensive faculty and administrative experience during his 24 years at the University of Central Arkansas. He served as Interim President, Executive Vice President, Vice President for Financial and Administrative Services, Vice President for Student Affairs, Dean of Students, and Director of Housing. Dr. Smith was also a faculty member in the College of Education and Professional Studies.
