The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at USA Children's and Women's Hospital is the regional referral center for premature and sick newborns.

The hospital coordinates transport of newborns from southeastern Alabama and Mississippi.

Our NICU is staffed by six board-certified neonatologists (newborn doctors), as well as by a team of experienced neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs). We also have a committed group of nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists that provide comprehensive care to these infants.

Our doctors have expertise in treating preterm newborns and managing infants with serious and life-threatening medical problems.

For newborns with birth defects and complex medical problems, the NICU team coordinates comprehensive medical care with input from other pediatric subspecialists. After discharge, many extremely preterm infants are seen in the developmental follow-up clinics to ensure that their development stays on track.
