The University of South Alabama Pathology Residency Program provides thorough training in all aspects of anatomic and clinical pathology with the specifics of the program tailored to meet the needs of the individual when possible. In addition to autopsies, surgical pathology and cytopathology, the anatomic pathology program includes specialized training in neuropathology, dermatopathology, pediatric pathology, electron microscopy, and forensic pathology. Laboratory medicine includes clinical chemistry, toxicology, hematopathology, transfusion medicine, microbiology, and immunopathology. Research experience is encouraged and facilities are available for residents to learn standard and specialized research techniques and to participate in projects independently or with faculty. Funds are available to support presentations of such projects at scientific meetings. The house staff participates actively in the educational activities of the department. These activities include interdepartmental conferences as well as participation in lectures, laboratories, case study assignments and discussions groups in the pathology/ laboratory medicine course for second year medical students.
The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and participate in NRMP Match.
