Dr. Wadad S. Mneimneh was recently appointed assistant professor of pathology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. Dr. Mneimneh earned her medical degree from the Saint Joseph University, Beirut, Lebanon, followed by an anatomic pathology residency at Hotel-Dieu de France, Beirut, Lebanon. She then pursued fellowships in anatomic pathology focusing on gastrointestinal, liver, thoracic and hematopathology in France. After moving to the United States, Dr. Mneimneh completed a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Albany Medical Center, Albany, New York, a surgical pathology fellowship focusing on gastrointestinal and liver pathology at Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, Indiana, and pulmonary pathology and surgical pathology fellowships at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. She is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Dr. Mneimneh is a member of the United State and Canadian Academy of Pathology and the Pulmonary Pathology Society.

We are proud to announce the official opening of our redesigned sign out area to accommodate the USA Health System rapid growth and future expansion plans. The new arrangement combines surgical pathology and hematopathology sign out areas, as well as a multimedia conference room for interdisciplinary conferences and resident education. The redesigned space will allow our core teams to work closely together to meet our patients' needs while giving us dedicated facilities to host briefings and other educational activities. We think you will be very pleased with the comfortable and professional new atmosphere.

The Pathology residents annually recognize one staff and one faculty member for their contribution to resident training and education. The 2016 recipient for the Staff Recognition Award was Debbie Buck and for the Faculty Recognition Award was Javier A. Laurini, M.D. The awards were presented by Susan Harley, M.D., chief resident, at the Annual Christmas in July Celebration.

Dr. Kahn’s and Maldonado’s “Immunotactoid Glomerulopathy in a Patient with Hepatitis C Viral Infection” was accepted as a platform presentation at the Ultrapath XVIII Meeting of the Society of Ultrastructural Pathology (SUP) held in Lisbon, Portugal, July 11th - 15th, 2016. Dr. Maldonado was presented with the SUP Tucker Trainee Award for his presentation. Dr. Maldonado also represented the Pathology department as guest speaker for the Allan Tucker session, where he presented a talk entitled “A great teacher: Joseph Allan Tucker”.

The Pathology Department at the University of South Alabama welcomes Drs. Krutika Patel, Monira Haque, and Nadia Hammed to our residency training program. The pathology housestaff and program leadership enjoyed a painting party in celebration of our new residents' arrival. This party was unique in that the subjects were histologic examples of features not usually encountered in routine sections such as colonic crypts that look like flowers, Edward Munch's "The Scream" that showed up in a placenta section and a "smiling osteocyte" in a bone marrow section.

This is a bittersweet time of the year when we celebrate the graduation of our senior residents. Drs. Maria Del Valle Estopinal, Ioannis Ioannidis and Stephen Marbut have successfully completed the Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency Program at the University of South Alabama. During the last four years, they have made a lasting mark on our program and will be sorely missed. We gathered together to celebrate their accomplishments and to wish them success in their future endeavos.

Faculty and residents attended the 2016 Tri-State Pathology Conference hosted by the Alabama Association of Pathologists. Speakers included Dr. Brett Baskovich, our current Director of Molecular Pathology and Dr. Marcelo Horenstein, our former Director of Dermatopathology, currently at The Dermatology Group in New Jersey. Dr. Susan Harley, PGY2 and current chief resident, received the first prize award for her platform presentation.

In addition to Dr. Tucker’s many achievements at an institutional, state, national and international level, our department was especially touched by his dedication to teaching and his kindness and generosity. Dr. Allan Tucker, Louis Lenoir Locke professor and chair of pathology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, recently was selected to receive the 2015 Distinguished Service Award sponsored by the Association of Pathology Chairs. This honor recognizes lifetime achievements in the field of academic pathology that includes accomplishments in all academic missions, medical education, research and clinical service. Dr. Allan Tucker, professor and chair of the department of pathology, along with 10 medical students and three residents were selected to be named to the University of South Alabama Chapter of the Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine Honor Society. The USA College of Medicine Class of 2016 selects those who have demonstrated excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service. The honorees will be recognized at this year's White Coat Ceremony on June 20, 2015, at the USA Mitchell Center.

Dr. Brett Baskovich was appointed assistant professor of pathology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. Dr. Baskovich earned his medical degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL and completed his pathology residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL., and his fellowship in molecular genetic pathology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He is board certified by the American Board of Pathology. Dr. Baskovich is a member of the Association for Molecular Pathology and the Association for Pathology Informatics.
