Chair’s Message

What is the 21st Century Neurologist?

Dean K. Naritoku, M.D.Over the last century, the neurologist has been the physician most knowledgeable about the brain and nerves, the most complex organs of the body. Because of the complexity of the central nervous system and lack of tools to approach treatment, yesterday's neurologists were often perceived as offering no more than diagnostic skills. The rapid explosion of technology and therapies have radically changed what a neurologist can do. Advances in imaging now allow us to see inside the brain, with exquisite detail to identify structural abnormalities. Our ability to measure electrical activity and metabolism can further identify the underlying causes of the brain abnormality. New pharmacologic and device therapies as well as new surgical approaches allow us to specifically treat their underlying causes. As a result, the 21st Century Neurologist can now accurately identify brain disorders and directly intervene to correct or improve the abnormalities.

The Department of Neurology at the University of South Alabama strives to move the field of Neurology towards even more active disease management, to directly improve the outcome of patients with neurologic disorders such as stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and Alzheimer’s Disease. Our recent additions to our faculty now allow us to remove brain abnormalities that cause epilepsy, to open closed blood vessels in the brain using a retrieval device and to shut down abnormal immune responses that cause damage to the brain. In the care we provide, and the clinicians we train, you will see our constant commitment to the future of neurologic care.
