MCI Education & Awareness Initiatives
MCI is committed to decreasing cancer disparities and breaking down barriers by ensuring that we provide education and awareness programs that will lead to increased cancer prevention, earlier detection of cancers and a greater quality of life for all Alabamians. We have teamed up with Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), other statewide academic institutions, and healthcare providers to cultivate key programs. These collaborations allows us to provide preventative services and foster the education needed to impact our eight county region of southwest Alabama.
FITWAY Alabama Colorectal Cancer Prevention Program
MCI has contracted with ADPH to provide community and physician outreach and education to an eight county region. Through this initiative we aim to significantly increase colorectal cancer screening rates among people 50 years of age and older. Alabama is one of 25 states to receive funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for colorectal cancer prevention. Fight for Life Cancer Education Center
Located in Mobile at the Franklin Primary Health Center, Inc., patients and families are able to access information and receive resources aimed at early detection of breast cancer. An onsite patient navigator provides educational materials, teaches proper self-breast examination techniques and provides resources to allow greater accessibility to preventative services and treatment. The goal is for patients and families to take greater ownership of their health and allow them to more comfortably navigate their way through available preventive healthcare resources in the community.
The Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition (ACCCC)
The ACCCC is a statewide network of physicians, organizations, medical groups, cancer patients, cancer survivors and interested individuals dedicated to reducing the impact and burden of cancer on Alabama. Faculty and staff are active participants within the coalition and serve in leadership positions on the ACCCC Board.
The ACCCC exists to develop and sustain an integrated and coordinated approach to reducing cancer incidence, morbidity and mortality, and to improving the quality of life and care for cancer survivors, their families, and their caregivers. ACCCC fulfills its mission by improving access, reducing cancer disparities, advocating for public policy and implementing the Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan, which addresses prevention, early detection, treatment, follow-up care, palliation, and behavioral and clinical trials research.
Since its formation in 1988, the ACCCC has build a successful history of cancer control through an integrated approach that includes prevention, early detection, treatment and palliation. Members of the ACCCC work together in assessing the state's cancer concerns, identifying priorities, locating gaps in service and education, and allocating resources efficiently.
In 2011, the ACCCC adopted a simple motto to sum up its mission moving forward: "Educate. Advocate. Participate." The research, knowledge and technology exist today to significantly reduce the impact of cancer on Alabama. It is the ACCC's purpose to help discover, share and utilize the information and resources that can help reach that goal.
