• Initiated in 2000 as the only academic cancer research institute in the upper Gulf coast region, the creation of the Mitchell Cancer Institute represents the single most ambitious research growth initiative in the history of the University of South Alabama.

• Leadership team includes Michael A. Finan, M.D., Director; William R. Taylor, M.D., Chief and Senior Staff Physician; and Rodney P. Rocconi, M.D., Associate Director for Clinical Research.

• Clinical services include Medical Oncology Services, Radiation Oncology Services, Gynecologic Oncology Services, and Diagnostic Imaging Services/64-PET/CT. Surgical Oncology is provided through the USA Department of Surgery and Community Surgery. 

• State-of-the-art 125,000 sq. ft. integrated clinical & research building completed in 2008.

• Radiation therapy service includes the state-of-the-art USA Medical Center Cyberknife, as well as the MCI Physician office Tomotherapy System and 64 slice PET-CT Scanner.

• The USA Medical Center infusion suite, located in the same building as MCI, features both private and semi-private infusion stations with a view of the terraced park.

• Easy access to the inpatient and diagnostic facilities available at USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital, USA Medical Center and Mobile Infirmary Medical Center.

• Research focus areas included: Cancer Prevention/Drug Discovery, DNA Damage and Repair, Cancer Biology, and Biomarkers/Early Detection.

• Core Support Laboratories including: flow cytometry, advanced imaging, genomics, proteomics, pathology, tissues, biobank, and drug discovery. 

• Administrative and support area featuring: Integration of senior faculty and staff offices on one wing including clinical faculty, research faculty, executive faculty and administrative staff. Common and shared conference rooms on the second floor administrative wing.
