The University of South Alabama and Infirmary Health System today agreed on a major, new strategic health care alliance designed to strengthen health care and cancer treatment throughout the region.

The two largest health care providers in Mobile will collaborate to provide innovative cancer treatment and research through the USA Cancer Research Institute. The new USA Cancer Research Institute will be built adjacent to USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital and Mobile Infirmary in midtown.

Leaders said alliance would move the USA Cancer Research Institute forward at least five years in terms of a built-in patient base and access to patients for research and clinical trials.

USA President Gordon Moulton said of the alliance, “This is one of the best things the University has been involved in and one of the best things for this community,” he said. “Our whole system will be enhanced, and it will result in improved delivery of health care in the city and region.

Infirmary Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Chandler Bramlett said, “This will have a huge positive impact on the community, and it will substantially enhance the quality of health care for the region.”

Infirmary Health System will operate Knollwood Hospital in west Mobile.

USA and Infirmary Health System, which represent the two largest payrolls in Mobile County, announced their intention to form an alliance in July. Today’s decision finalized the agreement.
