Career Planning Meetings:Choosing a Discipline

M3-class 2108-TG.jpg

For some medical students, choosing a career path to follow after medical school is daunting.  Second semester juniors are encouraged to self-assess for likes/dislikes, strengths/weaknesses, and general aptitudes.  They are provided with access to the AAMC Careers in Medicine website which has links to self-assessment tools. As the junior students are working through the process, clinical departments schedule an informational meeting between the months of January and February. Students are encouraged to attend as many meetings as possible. These meetings are designed to help guide the student in their discipline and advisor choice.

The different departmental meeting information shared below includes a departmental statement about the philosophy of the specialty, general information about the residency experience in that specialty, and employment prospects following residency. The final and essential step in this process is student guidance/counseling/mentorship on an individual basis by members of the clinical departments.  Students select their advisors from the list provided by each department of the faculty who are interested and available to perform this important function.

It is the student's responsibility to provide a copy of their transcript (printed from PAWS), class rank, Step 1 score, and copies of any clinical evaluations which have been completed to their advisor at the initial meeting. The student should update their advisor of any change/s in their academic standing throughout the year.

The students will receive a faculty advisor form in January. The Faculty Advisor Form is due to Karen Braswell, Mastin 202, March 31, 2017. Click the link below to review the Faculty Advisor's Responsibilities.
