March 12, 2014 - Monte L. Moorer Foundation Gives $500,000 to USA Children's & Women's Hospital
Article

The Monte L. Moorer Foundation has given $500,000 to the University of South Alabama Children’s & Women’s Hospital to enhance the hospital’s Mother/Baby Unit for expectant mothers and their families. In recognition of this generous support, the unit will be officially renamed the Moorer Mother/Baby Unit.

The support from the Foundation will be used to renovate and enlarge patient rooms on the Unit, install new flooring, and update furniture and other items to match the decor of the hospital’s new expansion. There will also be a separate waiting room and a small play area for siblings, so visitors and families will have an even better experience at Children’s & Women’s.

This is not the Foundation’s first experience with USACW. Three years ago, they gave a $500,000 gift to upgrade the hospital’s diagnostic equipment and expand and remodel the radiology department.

Bradley Goodyear Smith, board chairman of the Monte L. Moorer Foundation, said, “We felt the first gift was a wise decision so we decided to do it again. Everyone on the committee had in one way or another been touched by the need for advanced facilities for infants and mothers. Children & Women’s is providing a valuable service to the community and we are thrilled to support their mission.”

“This gift is huge for us,” said Mother/Baby Unit Nurse Manager Veronica Hudson. “We are the best hospital for care of all women and children. This gift helps us look like the professional facility that we are. We cannot wait to say, ‘Welcome to our happy place.’"

The current Mother/Baby Unit cares for mothers from throughout south Alabama and southeast Mississippi. The unit averages five to 15 births each day, or about 50 each week or more than 200 every month. USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital delivers more than 2,600 babies annually, more than any other hospital in the Mobile area.

Owen Bailey, USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital administrator, said, "We are grateful to the Monte L. Moorer Foundation for their support. This gift will greatly enhance the experience of mothers, babies and their families at Children’s & Women’s.”

Construction will begin on the unit this year.

The Monte L. Moorer Foundation gift is part of the Campaign for USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital. To date, the campaign has raised $8,456,763 toward the overall goal of $10.6 million. The campaign will end in November 2014.

USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital is the only freestanding hospital in the region dedicated specifically to the health care needs of children and women, offering Mobile’s only neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, pediatric oncology outpatient center and high-risk obstetrical care.
