The University of South Alabama Medical Center has received a $300,000 gift from philanthropist Hansjoerg Wyss for a secondary heating and cooling unit and an emergency power generator for its operating rooms.
When the Medical Center was designed 50 years ago, a single air handling unit was designated to cover the OR. With one unit controlling all nine rooms, it was difficult to perform even routine maintenance while maintaining the desired environment inside the rooms.
Along with the second unit, the gift will cover an emergency power generator, since the existing ones do not have the capacity to add additional power loads.
“Through this generous gift we are able to provide a better environment for our patients, operating room staff and physicians,” Medical Center Administrator Beth Anderson said. “USA Medical is grateful for the support of Hansjoerg Wyss and the HJW Foundation.”
In 2012, Wyss’ HJW Foundation gave the Medical Center $150,000 to update the operating rooms.
